Jay’s Résumé Tips Series – How Your Name Should Appear on Your Résumé

Your name as it appears on your résumé is the first thing readers see when they look at your document, so be sure to use it to your advantage by considering the following;

If you have a preferred name, include it in parenthesis between your first and last name. Don’t start off a job interview with a potentially awkward conversation about your preferred name.

Depending on your career goals I’ll advise my clients to use a middle initial or not, but it mostly comes down to preference. If you have a common name using your middle initial may help distinguish you from others with similar names. Additionally, there was a 2014 study about using middle initials that showed using a middle initial can make you seem smarter to those who don’t know you. Employers like to hire smart people.

If it’s important or a common practice in your field (check LinkedIn to be sure), include your degrees, licenses or certifications after your name. Including these distinctions after your name works great because they communicate a lot of information at a glance.
